End of Storm Elf Challenge

Fri Jun 26, 2009, 12:45 AM
Okay, I had been hoping that the challenge would generate the one thing that it did not, which was creative input and ideas. It didn't have to be pictures (although those would have been nice too). Even just little snippets of ideas for cultural tidbits as to why the Mahtan'dorei, or Storm Elves, developed the way they did.

It didn't even have to be how they dressed (or didn't dress, as the case may be). Heck, going into parts of their hypothetical culture besides their clothing preferences would have been really helpful!

Maybe I just haven't hit the idea of a challenge right. I'd have offered a prize, but I don't really think my art is a good enough prize, and this wasn't so much of a competition as a proposed open group project.

That being said, I'm bringing an end to the "challenge," although I'm still open to ideas, if anyone has any they care to share.

Should anyone else offer to put up a "prize" of some sort, I suppose the contest would be back on, but then there would actually be some sort of time-frame involved, and I'm still enamored with the idea of an open project...

Say, would you mind if I wrote a Storm Elf story?
:iconreiko-foxx:
Eh, give it a shot if you want. If I like it enough, I'll even includie it in the Lore I'm developing for the race! :meow:

Also, I was wondering, how does their society in general in general react to nudity? I'm assuming that it's something like this: toplessness is only noticed slightly, but bottomlessness is noticed more. So the hunters probably put some clothes on when entering towns, but the shamans don't, just ignore the stares they receive.
:iconreiko-foxx:
Well, the Ardent, being the closest thing that the Storm Elves have to a regular priesthood (and thus being the most likely to build and dedicate shrines and temples and set up doctrines), are near-fanatic nudists. They don't wear any clothing themselves, and you can bet that any shrine of temple they raise will have a "Leave Your Clothing and Weapons at the Door" rule. Which wouldn't be the case with a shrine built and run by Shamans (they don't care what other people wear - they just don't wear anything but body paint themselves).

As for the Hunters puting on loinclothes or pants when they get to town: Not in the starting area as the villages their don't even sell armor or clothing items to hunters before they reach tenth level. This is mostly due to having similar feelings of being more closely tied to nature through nudity, and pressure from the Ardent on local merchants because they are aware of this fact and want to promote spontaneous Druid creation. The merchants and Hunters don't mind this too much, as the Ardent's goals are laudable, but the consensus is that ten levels is long enough to find out if someone is going to become a Druid instead of a Hunter. After ten levels, Storm Elf Hunters' attitudes towards clothing turns from devoted nudism to practical consessions as they are ready to leave the areas of weak monsters and nonabrasive plants. Pretty much, a Hunter's first contact with thistles or thorns puts an end to their not wearing shoes away from towns, and with shoes they generally start girding their loins as well.

Once away from the starting region, where they start encountering other races more frequently, you would probably see the attitudes shift to what you've just described: Toplessness noticed slightly (and not in a negative manner), with nudity barely getting any further attention (from other Storm Elves anyway). However, actual bottomlessness (where the loin is left specifically bare despite wearing a top) would most likely be viewed as being deliberately vulgar and provocative, and thus frowned upon. Even by Shamans and the Ardent, who would be of the opinion of "take the rest off or cover that thing up, you freak!"

Do note that merchants in the starting region (and only in the starting region) do not sell clothing or armor to Hunters of other races either - if their Hunters can't buy such gear there, then neither can anybody elses Hunters...

You should draw a 20th level Hunter and an epic level hunter.

Also, it'd be cool to expand on the temple idea.
:iconveryangrybiscuit4:
Are you going to continue with the Storm Elf stuff?
:iconreiko-foxx:
Probably.

Might be a while though.

And I'm still welcoming creative input (costume ideas, perhaps someone drawing how the males dress, ponderings of what their hodgepodge architecture looks like...).

It doesn't have to be pictures. Comments, discussions, or even a simple "yes this, no that, or how about..."

:)

Well, I was thinking that the males would dress similar to the females:barechested, only covering what has to be covered. They'd probably use-loincloth type items.

And my other idea was for worship: what if they had 4 temples in each town, one to respresent each element? Earth, wind, fire, and water temples.
:iconreiko-foxx:
Not sure if they'd actually use seperate temples dedicated to the four elements, as opposed to having four branches of the same temple arranged around a common hub.

But you do bring up an interesting idea that some of them may very well start dedicating shrines to those purposes, and either way they go seems valid at this point in their development.
